The easiest way to insure your rudder is straight is to attach a string to the front center of the fuselage with a T-pin. Now bring the string back around the rudder and back to the  T-pin. When the rudder is straight the string will be flush with both the left a right faces of the rudder. Any misalignment is easily detectable.

If your are using a Y style push rod for split elevators here is a useful tip to easily feed each end through the fuselage sides. Get two inner rods from a nyrod. Feed each through the back of the fuselage until they come out the radio compartment. Now thread the ends of each push rod into the nyrod. You can now simply pull the push rods back through the fuse openings.
